Wizard World Convention Bringing Geek-palooza To Philly
When most people think of comic book conventions, they immediately picture hundreds of Comic Book Guys from "The Simpsons," arguing over whether Batman would actually beat Captain America in a fight. However, when executives in the entertainment industry think of comic book conventions, they think of something entirely different: Walking dollar signs.
It's no big surprise -- with movies like "Spider-Man 3" taking in over $150 million in its opening weekend, and eight of the top-grossing films in U.S. box-office history being in the science fiction and fantasy genre, comic conventions can hold lucrative assets. Comic book conventions are becoming major media events, featuring previews and premieres of many upcoming high-profile releases.
Wizard Entertainment, publisher of the comic magazine Wizard, hosts one of the most popular conventions. At Wizard World conventions, where fans are privy to the inside track on their favorite movies and TV shows, fans can meet the people who portray their beloved comic characters.
Wizard World: Philadelphia, the next Wizard Entertainment convention, will be coming to Philadelphia's Pennsylvania Convention Center June 15 to 17, and will feature appearances by Hayden Panettiere ("Heroes"), Joe Quesada (Editor in Chief, Marvel Comics), Marv Wolfman (Creator of "Blade," "The New Teen Titans," "Nightwing," and "Bullseye"), Guest of Honor Brian Michael Bendis (writer of "Ultimate Spider-Man," "New Avengers," "Mighty Avengers," and "Powers"), among many others.
